Contour & Charcoal Drawings.
PROJECT 01 / 17
SHEETS 04–05
Observational drawing through continuous lines, light, shadow, and contrast.
Architectural summary
These observational studies move from outline to tonal depth. Contour drawings record an entrance, a portrait, a hand, and everyday forms through carefully placed edges. The charcoal work then uses light and shadow to describe stairs, recesses, and geometric surfaces. Together, the images establish a foundation for representing proportion, texture, and spatial depth in architecture.
Contour & Observation
PORTFOLIO SHEET 04Entrance Contour Drawing
A line drawing traces the entrance doors, glazing, canopy, and adjacent walls, using a few ground lines to establish depth and approach.
Portrait in Contour
An observational portrait uses outlines around the face, hair, and shoulders to describe proportion, developing the careful looking used in architectural sketching.
Organic Outline Study
A contour drawing follows the rounded body and extending arms of an octopus, contrasting flowing organic edges with the portfolio’s more geometric studies.
Hand and Gesture Study
This hand drawing records bent fingers, overlapping edges, and changes in contour, examining how a small number of lines can suggest volume.
Object and Curved Edges
An observational drawing describes a handheld object through an oval ring, rounded controls, and a tapering handle, emphasizing overlapping contours and perspective.

Contour & Charcoal Drawings: contour & observation. This presentation sheet brings together entrance contour drawing, portrait in contour, organic outline study and related views, preserving the original layout and annotations.
Charcoal, Light & Depth
PORTFOLIO SHEET 05Light Across Architectural Planes
A charcoal composition combines vertical frames, diagonal edges, and deep recesses, using sharp highlights and dark shadows to separate overlapping architectural planes.
Steps in Light and Shadow
This charcoal drawing studies a stair and adjoining wall surfaces, with repeated horizontal highlights making the depth and rhythm of the steps visible.
Recessed Geometric Openings
A charcoal study arranges dark square recesses within a lighter field, using tonal changes to suggest depth in an otherwise flat geometric composition.
Circular Opening and Radiating Forms
A circular opening anchors this charcoal drawing, while surrounding diagonal and vertical forms use graduated shading to express curved surfaces and recessed space.
